About the organisation
MPA is Australia’s leading melanoma and skin cancer consumer organisation and supports individuals, families and carers affected by melanoma, providing essential support and information, community connections, and advocacy. Our purpose is to support, connect and advocate for Australians affected by melanoma and work towards its prevention.
Australia has one of the highest melanoma rates globally, yet access to consistent support remains alarmingly limited. MPA is committed to changing this through targeted initiatives, advocacy, and partnerships.
About the role
Lead the Fight Against Melanoma: Director at Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA)
Role: Non-Executive Board Director, Melanoma Patients Australia
Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA) is on a mission to bridge a critical gap in the care journey: providing world-class, compassionate support for Australians affected by melanoma. With a new CEO commencing in February and a bold strategy in place, we are poised to amplify our impact and advocate for much-needed change in the melanoma care landscape.
We are seeking two volunteer Non-Executive Board Directors to join the Board in guiding MPA’s vision to create a world where no one affected by melanoma walks alone.
People with lived experience of the impact of melanoma are encouraged to apply.
The Role
Working with your fellow Directors and the CEO you will contribute to and oversee the achievement of strategic objectives, while remaining accountable for the organisation’s overall performance. Virtual Board Meetings occur approximately every two months and new Directors may be asked to join and contribute to a Board Committee, which meets virtually on a quarterly basis.
Skills Required
As a well-established Board we are specifically looking for a range of skills to help us deliver on an ambitious strategic agenda for the next three years:
- Knowledge/experience of relevant funding sources including the role of governments, corporates, philanthropic, and other sources
- Knowledge/experience in advocacy in health and health-related sectors
- Leadership and management skills in delivery of health and support services in health, human services, and community sectors
- Knowledge/experience in development and delivery of education and psychosocial support services in health and community sectors
- Knowledge/experience in public relations, marketing, communications, and branding
You are also expected to bring:
- Understanding of corporate governance principles and financial literacy at a senior level
- Alignment with the role of the organisation and empathy for people affected by a life-threatening diagnosis such as cancer
- Communication, stakeholder management, and negotiation skills
- Capacity to devote time and energy to the role of a Board Director
Location
MPA is a national virtual organisation and as such the incumbent of this role could be located anywhere across Australia. The role will require attendance at various in person meetings and engagements, usually on the eastern seaboard.
